Choosing A Computer For Freelance Graphic Design
July 4th, 2008
For many years, when a freelance graphic designer chose a new computer, Macintosh was the automatic choice. Macintosh computers provided the memory, processing speed and storage necessary for large design files. Most graphic design firms and printing companies used only Macintosh computers. Today, that trend continues but PCs are making inroads in what used to be territory exclusive to Macintosh. Therefore, the decision on what computer to purchase is not as clear cut as it once was for graphic designers.
Hardware is the first consideration of most freelance designers. While PCs have been proven to rival Macs in terms of processing speed, some people claim that Macs still process large graphic files more efficiently. Also, Macintosh computers have a better maintenance record than most PCs. However, when a hardware problem does arise a Mac can cost more to repair.
Software is where the Macintosh shines compared to the PC. All the major graphic design applications are available for both platforms and run with similar speed. However, the Macintosh operating system has historically been much more stable than the Windows operating system and much easier for the end user to troubleshoot. Additionally, Macintosh computers are far less susceptible to viruses, adware and spyware than PCs, which are notorious for their security flaws.
There are considerations beyond the hardware and software that a freelance designer needs to consider. For example, Macintosh computers typically cost more than PCs. However, once a PC is equipped with the appropriate memory, processor and graphics card to efficiently process graphic files, the cost is fairly similar. If a designer decides to switch platforms any graphic design software already owned must be repurchased under a new license which leads many designers to stick with one platform.
Aesthetics are often a consideration of many designers. Macintosh computers are designed to look sleek and creative while PCs are typically more standard looking. However, some of Macintosh’s most originally designed computers are not suitable for graphic design work, leaving a designer with the standard CPU tower, monitor and peripherals, though perhaps in interesting colors.
Finally, careful consideration must be given to interactions with outside vendors and clients. Many printing companies and graphic design firms still have a strong pro-Macintosh bias and may reject native files created with PC software. However, if you are submitting EPS, TIFF or PDF files, the difference in platform will be negligible.

Identity Theft Impact
July 4th, 2008
While a lot of identity theft is through the Internet and affect those who shop or do financial business online, there are still over half of identity theft U.S. residents being victimized by those that they know or have some sort or ongoing relationship with. The thieves could be members of the victim’s family, housemates, roommates, coworkers, neighbors and alleged friends. According to the U.S. Federal Trade Commission, the affect of identity theft is felt just as often off the Internet as on.
The affect of identity Internet theft, or any identity theft is pervasive, hard to counteract and often devastating.
In identity theft, the perpetrator takes over the identity of a victim by stealing her or his private information - things of a critical nature such as driver’s license, social security number, bank account number, or the number of her or his credit cards. How this identity theft, Internet or otherwise has an affect on the victim is to potentially see the ruination of credit as the thief illegally obtains loans that he or she fails to pay or opening credit card or merchant accounts that once again he or she fails to pay. To keep this identity theft fraud going as long as possible the thief also changes the billing addresses for these accounts so the victim is unaware of the unauthorized transactions as long as possible.
What these identity Internet and other thieves often do to affect this address change is to put in a phone change of address at the post office.
To counterbalance the affect of Internet identity theft, or to head it off before it even happens, it’s first and foremost important that you give out your social security number sparingly, never record your debit or ATM card pin numbers, shred all important documents before you dispose of them, and at least once a year ask for and carefully study your credit report. You should order and review the reports from all three major credit reporting bureaus - TransUnion, Experian and Equifax.

Unfortunately, young children have been the prey
of a good many mentally ill individuals in this
world. Their pattern is to seek out children in
friendship only to pounce upon them when the
child lets down its guard in learning to trust
the stranger. You must first accept that there is
indeed a problem as well as accepting that there
may be someone who is a predator of your family.
This is the first step in understanding that
there are others out there that will harm others
if given the opportunity, and acknowledging that
you must protect your family from those dangers.
It is imperative to understand all the different
ways that a predator can introduce themselves
into your family. This will help you to protect
you and your family from sex offenders.
One of the first areas that will aid you to
protect your children from sex offenders is
teaching them how to safely and securely use the
internet and its tools. Although many children
are more interested in talking with their friends
while online, they are able to reach out to
others and strangers are able to reach out to
them. There are many ways to protect your
children while online that you may wish to
consider. You may want to purchase special
computer software that is able to block your
children from viewing vulgar activities and
language as well as monitor the online activities,
which they do partake.
It is very important to realize that in their
innocence that a child may make a mistake and
give out important personal information. Let your
children know that if they do make a mistake, to
let you know as soon as possible, so that the
situation can be taken care of, and that they can
save themselves even after making a mistake. You
must let them know that there are sick
individuals out there who are a danger to them,
even sexually. There are many ways that you will
want to teach them about staying away from sex
offenders.
You must take all precaution in letting the child
know that they can protect themselves from sex
offenders who target children as well as other
people. You must also help them understand that
if they are abducted they can put up a fight and
struggle for their freedom, by calling attention
to themselves and the offender or anyone else who
will cause them harm, stranger or not, online or
offline.
Since there are so many different areas of online
use, you must let your children know that they
can still keep themselves safe while using
instant messaging and chat rooms. You must
protect your children by letting them know that
it is not permissible to use public or private
online chat rooms, as they are potentially in
danger while talking to any stranger. By
understanding the rules of staying safe, while
online they are able to use the tools without
jeopardizing their safety. You as a parent need
to be able to utilize your computer without the
worry of your children being influenced by a
sexual predator.

Freelancing as A Career Option
July 4th, 2008
Home bound workers can either consider telecommuting or freelancing. While telecommuting may keep you out of your home for some hours a week, online freelancing is a good way to make money if you are forced to stay at home. For example, homemakers, part-time students, retired folk, or others who wish to supplement their income from jobs or businesses can all consider freelancing.
Freelance Skill Sets
You can start earning as a freelancer as long as you have skills that someone is willing to pay for. For example, writers, web designers, photographers, and programmers can earn a substantial income by creating articles, websites, portfolios and software from home. The Internet is a hot and viable source of income for freelancers from around the world. Your target customers can be webmasters, online business owners, blog owners etc. For example, blogs and wikis are hot sources of income for freelance writers nowadays, and there’s no reason why you can’t tap into this market if you possess good writing skills.
Freelance Income
On the flip, your income may fluctuate from one month to another. As with all businesses, freelancing does not guarantee a stable paycheck at the end of the month. So keep a small kitty reserve for dry days or have another source of income for which you can work part-time. Be prepared to accept boring, low-level work initially just to keep the cash flow strong. Once you get a good reputation for providing original, high-quality work at reasonable price, then clients will flock to you.
Freelance Advantages
Probably the best thing about freelancing is that you get to work at your pace, in your own hours, from home, and be your own boss. That means, your shop is open 24×7. And as long as you provide good quality work and meet deadlines, your clients will remain happy with you.
In order to be visible, you also need to be seen and heard in the right places, like forums, blogs, online groups, etc. Spend time everyday to visit such sites because they are invaluable repository of freelance gigs and email addresses of prospects. Alternatively you can sign up with freelance sites like Elance.com, GetAFreelancer.com and Scriptlance.com where you can start bidding on projects and snag a few as early as today!
To conclude, a freelance business is one of the best ways to earn money from home and to work for your own self. If you’ve got a fair amount of time on your hands, maybe you too should consider freelancing as your full-time career alternative or supplementary income source.
(Hint: While you can find plenty of lucrative freelance assignments on Elance, the other sites mentioned above generally tend to feature lesser-paid projects. However, if you’re just starting out as a freelancer, the competition on Elance can prove to be really tough. So you might want to first try GAF and Scriptlance to build up your portfolio, and then go for Elance.)

Stop Doing What Does Not Work For You
July 4th, 2008
Do you want to invigorate yourself? Do you want to feel life’s energy rushing through your veins? Do you want to get on track, get going, finally make some real headway and cruise your way through life? Then let me tell you this: in order to get these juices flowing, you have to stop doing what does not work for you. Stop doing all those things that drain your energy and make you feel empty. Stop sitting around and start standing up for yourself! Get rid of relationships that do not help you grow. Get rid of food that does not feed you. Get rid of activities that do not build you up! Stop doing whatever it is that makes you tired, irritated and grumpy. Break with people who don’t support you and deplete your energy! Stop doing whatever it is that pulls your energy level down, and start doing whatever it is that lifts your energy level up!
1) People - Break with people who ‘vampirize’ you - those who are constantly feeding off your precious energy. If you feel empty and muddled after meeting with certain people, then don’t meet with them anymore! When you feel your energy level is higher after meeting with certain people, then they are okay for you. Be aware of your energy level and how people affect it, and then act accordingly!
2) Conversations - Stop participating in conversations that keep you down, that make you feel annoyed or angry. Try to express your ideas in a calm and clear fashion, but if the other is not paying attention, then leave the conversation and go on with your business!
3) Activities - Stop doing whatever it is that makes you feel exhausted. If you don’t like cleaning the house, then find somebody else to do it for you, EVEN if you would do a better job by yourself! The question is not, “Who does a better job?” The question is, “What does this activity do to my energy level?” Stop doing what brings you down. Instead, do what boosts your energy.
4) Food - Stop eating and drinking food that makes you drowsy or bad tempered. Food has a direct influence on your mood. If drinking too much coffee makes you irritable, then don’t drink too much coffee. If drinking one cup of coffee in the morning gives you the energy to get started, then drink one cup of coffee. If one glass of wine makes you euphoric, then drink one glass of wine. If three glasses of wine make you feel dizzy, then don’t drink three glasses of wine.
5) Job - Appreciate and be appreciated. If your boss talks down to you, humiliates you, and doesn’t appreciate your work, then leave him. Find yourself a better boss! Find yourself a boss who DESERVES having YOU as an employee! Don’t stay around someone with such a low energy level. He will keep bringing you down. Find yourself a boss or a job that lifts up your energy level. When you try to hold on to a job that drains all your energy, then before long you will surely develop some kind of disease. Nobody can withstand a climate of low energy without paying the high price of illness and depression.
6) Places - Don’t stay in places where you don’t feel good. Some restaurants and caf?s are so noisy that it’s impossible to spend time there without severely attacking your energy vibrations. Too much noise, too many people, too much chaos will inevitably drag you down. Don’t stay in a house that has a bad energy to it. If a place is good for you then you will feel an energy boost whenever you spend time there!
This advice seems so simple that you might think I’m treating you like a four-year old. Make no mistake! Four year-olds often have a healthier relationship with themselves than we do. They will not go on eating or drinking something they do not feel comfortable with, but many adults do! Take their example!
What to do when you notice that your energy level has been dragged down by a person, a place, an activity, or anything else? No problem, you can fix it immediately! The best remedy to uplift your energy vibration is: Nature. Go for a walk in the forest, or the park. Breathe the oxygen. Observe a flower in close-up. Look how Mother Nature very carefully painted the nerves in the leaves, and your energy level will be skyrocketing. Watch some children play, listen to some birds sing. Take your time.
If you can’t go out, then put on some inspirational music and dance around the table. This will do you good. Go to a quiet room and meditate for a while. Imagine you have an energy channel starting at your spine and going into the heart of the earth. Send down all the bad and low energy vibrations. Mother earth knows how to transform them into high-level energy. Imagine a channel from your spine into heaven, and feel how divine celestial energy is flowing into your body to replenish you with high-energy vibrations. See yourself surrounded by a magnificent white golden light. You can do this even at work, sitting in front of your computer, at a meeting, anywhere, anytime. You can also carry a gemstone with you, and “instruct” it to deviate low energy vibrations and permit only good vibrations to touch you.
You are the shepherd of your own energy. What vibration do you prefer: high or low? It’s up to you to flow around what feels bad and stick to what feels good. It’s up to you to clean up your energy field. Nothing too complex, just regular maintenance. Take an energy shower in the forest. Breathe!

Introduction to Westie Grooming
July 4th, 2008
Taking care of your westie is as important as taking care of yourself, we are giving you a quick heads up in westie grooming and the basics.
As human beings we all know the social value of a groomed look. You think of your dog as a family member, dont you? Then why shouldn’t you follow the same grooming routines like hair cut, nail cutting or bathing for your Westie as you religiously follow for your self? From the first day you bring your westie home you should introduce your puppy to a grooming regimen. Don’t wait to introduce your dog to the grooming regimen, we recommend you start from the first day you bring your puppy home. But there are certain procedures you should think about while grooming your dog. In your passion, if you overdo the things, it will serve no purpose at all. Read more below to learn about the westie grooming basics.
As you start with the Westie puppies, just limit your grooming time to two to three minutes and keep doing it at this time intervals till your little sweetie gets accustomed to the practice of grooming. Grooming West Highland White Terriers require a patient handling. Without being vulgar, you need to be firm and patient. Remember, heavy handling with the westies only deteriorates the things. Shouting at them, when things are not up to your expectation, will only discourage them to go through the grooming session properly. %KEYPHRASE6%. It is a special characteristic of the westies that they learn more and learn quicker if they are praised and rewarded. Praises will make the grooming session something to enjoy, not something to worry about.
It will be wiser to introduce your westie to the grooming routines by combing its long furs for a few minutes every day. Then when it is familiar with the practice and learns to enjoy the combing and brushing session, then switch over to clipping the out of place hairs. Also brush them out on a daily basis. Westies love attention and soon they will recognize the pampering spirit of these grooming sessions and in fact start to wait for them.
Sometimes the westie owners get confused with regard to the choice between stripping and clipping. If your dog is going to appear in some kind of dog show, then you can consider the stripping, which make the coat harder and coarser. For the pet dogs, stripping is optional and not require. For them clipping seems to be a better option for getting rid of the extra hairs as it makes the coat softer and on many westies, it brings a wavy effect.
If you prefer to strip your westie, do not bathe it prior to the procedure. Bathing makes the hair slippery and much harder to pull. On the other hand, you need to bathe the westie prior to clipping, as it prevents your clippers to become dull easily. However, brush the dog thoroughly, before you start striping your dog.
Bathing and taking care of its teeth are also the important part of West Highland White Terrier grooming. Also cut its nails from time to time.

Heart Disease - A Very Real Threat To All Dogs
July 4th, 2008
Heart disease is one of the most frequently seen problems in dogs. Different diseases involving the heart valves or heart muscle can lead to heart failure. Mitral insufficiency is by far the most common type of heart disease seen in dogs.
Mitral insufficiency involves the heart valve that separates chambers in the heart. If this valve becomes diseased and fails to close properly, blood is allowed to flow backward, which reduces blood flow forcing the heart to work harder to keep up with the body’s demand for blood. This over working of the hart eventually leads to premature heart failure.
This disease can result from normal wear and tear associated with age, or it can appear secondary to other diseases, normally periodontal disease. Bacteria from the diseased teeth and gums can enter the blood stream and attach to the heart valve, setting up infection and inflammation. Over time, the heart valve becomes damaged and scarred, making it unable to function properly. The end result is heart failure.
The clinical signs associated with a failing heart include coughing, especially at night and after exercise, breathing difficulties, distended abdomen, weight loss, and exercise intolerance. Your veterinarian can diagnose heart disease by x-rays and electrocardiogram.
Many forms of heart disease are accompanied by heart murmurs. A heart murmur is nothing more than an irregular sound caused by the disruption of normal blood flow within the heart. Heart murmurs are usually classified according to their intensity as heard by a stethoscope. Your veterinarian can identify which portion of the heart is affected by pinpointing the area on the dog’s chest where the murmur is the loudest.
Unfortunately, most cases of heart disease are nonreversible. The treatment for any dog suffering from such is to create an environment that relieves some of the workload on the heart. Special diets and medications can be used to improve the quality of life and extend the animal’s life expectancy. Early detection is the key here. At the first sign of clinical problems mentioned earlier you should get the dog to a veterinarian as soon as possible.

The 10 Most Fattening Cocktails
July 4th, 2008
You’re at your favorite cocktail lounge or nightclub unwinding with friends after work. You’ve already eaten dinner and now you look forward to enjoying good friends, laughter, and your favorite cocktail drink.
Before you order your next mojito or margarita, stop and think about the number of calories hiding inside that cocktail glass. That’s right - calories. If you are health conscious, or on a weight loss plan, your favorite drink might not be so friendly towards your waistline.
It’s entertaining to watch the bartender mix up a drink and pour it into a fancy glass, but what exactly is in that cocktail shaker?
Unfortunately, the answer is plenty of sugar and calories. Did you know that some cocktail drinks are as fattening as eating a Big Mac? The reason for this is that alcohol and the mixers added to it, contain lots of calories.
A one ounce serving of 80-proof alcohol contains 90 calories. Now think of what happens when you add sugar-laden cola, simple syrup, pre-made mixes, and flavored cream. Most likely, you and your friends will have more than one of these fattening drinks during your evening out.
If you enjoy cocktails regularly, you are unknowingly packing on the pounds. How much? Well, here’s a list of the top 10 most fattening drinks from the cocktail menu:
1) Long Island Ice Tea - 780 calories. What makes it fattening? Five kinds of alcohol (vodka, tequila, rum, gin, triple sec), sweetened premix and cola.
2) Margarita - 740 calories. What makes it fattening? Tequila, triple sec, sweetened premix.
3) Pina Colada - 644 calories. What makes it fattening? Rum, coconut milk, sweetened premix.
4) White Russian - 425 calories. What makes it fattening? Vodka, coffee liquer, heavy cream.
5) Mai Tai - 350 calories. What makes it fattening? Two kinds of rum (light and dark), cr?me de almond, triple sec, pineapple juice, sweetened premix.
6) Champagne Cocktail - 250 calories. What makes it fattening? Champagne, cognac, sugar.
7) Fog Cutter - 225 calories. Four kinds of alcohol (rum, gin, brandy, sherry), orange juice, orgeat syrup.
Gin/Vodka and Tonic - 200 calories. What makes it fattening? Gin or vodka, sugar-laden tonic water.
9) Mojito - 160 calories. What makes it fattening? Rum, sugar, club soda, sugar water.
10) Cosmopolitan - 150 calories. What makes it fattening? Vodka, triple sec, cranberry juice, lime syrup.
To cut down on cocktail calories, keep things simple. For instance, you can order a vodka on the rocks with a splash of soda water or fresh squeezed juice. Ask your bartender for low calorie drink suggestions. Enjoying a drink or two doesn’t have to ruin your figure.

Five Tips for Buying Toys for Toddlers
July 4th, 2008
Most of us have been there before. You open the mailbox to find a brightly colored invitation to the birthday party of your favorite two year old. You hang the invitation on the refrigerator with great intentions to stop at the toy store after work to buy a great birthday gift. Several weeks later, you realize the party starts in 2 hours and you have yet to get the perfect gift. You jump in the car, race to the toy store, and run inside. Suddenly, you are surrounded by a sea of remarkable toys and start to panic! Take a deep breath and slow down for just a minute. These five tips will help you choose the perfect educational toy and get to the party in time.
First, be sure to buy a toy that is for a toddler. Sure, their parents may tell you that their child is so advanced, that they should be in third grade by now. But let’s face it; you should buy a toy that’s fit for a two year old. Otherwise, the child may not be interested in it, and end up just playing with the box. Also, it is important that they toy is in the right age range for the child to make sure it is safe. Little hands and mouths are not safe around toys with little detachable parts. Most toy stores arrange their products by corresponding age ranges, so head straight to the section designed for the child you have in mind.
Next, think about choosing a gift that allows parents to interact with their child to build skills important for later academic success. It is important for toddlers to be exposed to letters, letter sounds, and numbers. Look for brightly colored blocks, oversized flashcards, or puzzles with letters and numbers that may also have a tactile component like a fuzzy duck or shiny moon. Some phonological based toys also talk or sing to children. Parents always enjoy helping their child explore and create with oversized paper and crayons, or clay.
Third, to please both parent and child, shop around for great toddler books. Books made especially for toddlers are typically ones made from thick cardboard. They may have pop-up characters, animals with fur that kids can pet, and flowers with a scratch-and-sniff scent. It is important for parents to read to their children to introduce them to language and ideas, and also to instill a sense that reading and learning are important. Books also provide great bonding moments between parents and children.
Next, remember not to overdo it. Sure, it is tempting to try and pick out the biggest and best gift that will be at the party. It is always flattering when the birthday boy or girl latches on to the gift you presented, and barely lets go long enough to finishing opening the rest! But, the size of the gift and the amount of money you spend is not as important as the impact that your gift may have on that particular child. Choose something that will stimulate their minds and spur their development.
Last but not least, think creatively when shopping for educational toys for toddlers. Maybe you could try a plant that they can learn to love, water, and care for, along with their very first watering can. Or perhaps they would enjoy a wardrobe of dress-up clothes, so they can pretend to be a soldier, astronaut, or athlete.
When you are racing through the toy store on the way to another great birthday party, remember to choose a stimulating and creative toy that is age appropriate for your little friend. Just don’t forget to grab some wrapping paper on the way to the cash register.
